Yesterday, Oprah got exclusive access to the Yearn For Zion Ranch. I'm not going to recap the episode because it's worth watching or reading online, you need to judge for yourself if this is really a cult. I mean, its creepy, and no place I want to be, but they do seem happy so who am I to judge? I do draw the line at fashion and what needs to stop or, evolve rather, is their "style".
The older women make all the clothes on the compound, clearly they had one McCalls pattern and someone said it was "cute" and it stuck. The younger women wear lighter more innocent Easter egg shades, while the older women get darker shades-I didn't see anyone in red. The men wear blue button up shirts and blue jeans. Ish.
I'm a firm believer that what you wear reflects who you are, and this is a perfect example. These girls were simple, quiet, patient, obediant teenagers. They had cell phones (to talk to their mothers) and ipods (to listen to religious music) but no sports, art, music, or games to explore-just working in the garden or on the farm. Oh and their parents pick out their husbands for them.
As a teenager, I remember cutting holes in my jeans and my great grand mother nearly had a stroke. I loved them and spent hours perfecting the rips, I drew " Bon Jovi" on my sneakers, made my own bracelets, crimped my hair-anything to express myself. Teenagers don't really have good taste, and they push the envelope on sexuality at times, but at least you get some information. The Olsen sisters get a lot of flack for their fashion choices, but I have to say, they express themselves honestly and always change it up so they don't dissapear into the masses. I would totally be a member of their cult.
